From visitor to student: changing status in Canada

Many people enter Canada as visitors and later want to study. Changing status is possible but not automatic. Key points: • You generally need a DLI letter of acceptance before applying to change conditions to a study permit from inside Canada. • Not every visitor is eligible to apply inland — some must leave and apply from outside Canada. • Dual intent is allowed: wanting to study (or eventually settle) does not by itself mean you will be refused as a visitor, but you must still show you will leave when required if temporary status ends. • Studying without authorization before approval can jeopardize future applications. • Flagpoling and border strategies change frequently — confirm current IRCC and CBSA rules before acting. Plan finances, program start dates, and status expiry together. If your visitor status is close to expiring, discuss extension timing with a licensed consultant before you apply to study.
